The Golden Gate National Recreation Area could expand by nearly 900 acres under a bill introduced in both the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives.

The bill would authorize the National Park Service to purchase the Scarper Ridge property in San Mateo County that is adjacent to Rancho Corral De Tierra, which is nearly 3,900 acres of open space.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Representative Sam Liccardo (CA-16) and U.S. Senator Alex Padilla (Calif.) introduced legislation to expand and improve the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA). The bicameral bill would expand the boundaries of the GGNRA and allow the National Park Service to acquire the 896-acre Scarper Ridge property in San Mateo County – between El Granada and 280 – adjacent to Rancho Corral De Tierra. The 3,858-acre site is already managed by the Park Service.

Why does the government shut down?

The government shuts down when Congress is unable to pass appropriations bills that finance the operations of federal agencies and programs, such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH) or the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). These appropriations bills are designed to fund the government until the conclusion of each fiscal year, which ends on September 30. Currently, the government is funded through March 14.

WASHINGTON, DC—Just days before a potential government shutdown, House Republicans introduced another eleventh-hour stopgap funding bill that does nothing to lower costs, withholds veterans’ benefits, cuts affordable housing programs, and gives President Trump and Elon Musk nearly unfettered power to move funding between programs without the clear Congressional direction that accompanies more typical appropriations bills.

Former San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo ran on the slogan “get things done” in his campaign for the 16th Congressional seat, which represents the Los Altos area. But the Democrat is finding out that doing so is challenging with the U.S. government dominated by President Donald Trump and the Republicans.
