119th Congress

February 27, 2025

A group of House Democrats will introduce legislation today that would make it illegal for high-ranking government officials to create or promote crypto tokens—and would retroactively punish President Donald Trump for launching his own meme coin.

California Democrat Rep. Sam Liccardo, a freshman congressman who represents Silicon Valley, said he’s surprised the first piece of legislation he’s sponsoring takes aim at President Donal Trump’s meme coin.

In the days before President Trump took office, he did what no other president had done before.

He launched a meme coin.

It’s estimated that the entities behind the $TRUMP cryptocurrency coin, including one owned by Trump, accumulated close to $100 million in trading fees in less than two weeks.

To Silicon Valley’s freshman Rep. Sam Liccardo, the president’s issuance and endorsement of a digital asset raises “glaring ethical concerns.”

Hello Friends!

In these challenging times, I find my energy restored by flying home and connecting with our community in the district. My team and I have met with residents  in many live gatherings from San Jose to Pacifica, but next week, we hope to reach a broader group of our neighbors with a telephone town hall. Mark your calendars for TOMORROW, Tuesday, February 25th  at 6 PM PT. Once you dial in to 833-998-0865, you’ll be connected to the conversation with me and your neighbors. You can ask a question, make a comment, or simply listen to the discussion.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Democratic leadership in the U.S. House of Representatives has welcomed Congressman Sam Liccardo (CA-16) to House Democrats’ Rapid Response Task Force & Litigation Working Group. Together with pro-democracy partners, the Task Force will protect and defend everyday Americans from the onslaught of unconstitutional executive actions.

Congressman Liccardo issued the following statement:

Hello Friends!

This week, my office received thousands of messages and calls expressing various combinations of outrage and fear over the latest actions and orders of President Donald Trump—which I’m calling “Executive Disorders.”

I came into office in January ready to roll up my sleeves and work across the aisle to get traction on problems of common concern, such as the high cost of housing, insurance, and child care for American families.
