Rep. Liccardo Urges Department of Defense to Keep Local Commissary Open
Located in Mountain View, the Moffett Field commissary is the Bay Area’s primary resource for military families seeking affordable groceries.
SAN JOSÉ, CA—Congressman Sam Liccardo (CA-16) has called on the Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA) to keep open the only commissary serving Bay Area servicemembers, veterans, and their families. Located at Moffett Federal Airfield, the site provides vital access to affordable groceries, with the next nearest commissary nearly 75 miles away. The Administration has proposed to permanently close the commissary.
“Our service members and veterans have made enormous sacrifices to protect our nation. The least we can do is ensure they have access to affordable, basic necessities,” said Liccardo. “Losing the Moffett Field Commissary would be a hardship for the Bay Area’s military community, and I urge the Defense Commissary Agency to preserve or replace it.”
In the letter, Rep. Liccardo urges DeCA to stay at Moffett Field, communicate any contingency or relocation plans should an agreement with NASA not be reached, and assess the economic impact on the thousands of Bay Area military families and retirees who depend on commissary savings.
“The Bay Area’s high cost of living already puts immense strain on military families,” Liccardo added. “We need solutions that strengthen—not shrink—the support available to those who serve.”
