Liccardo Announces Moffett Field Commissary to Stay Open

February 19, 2026

Department of Defense and NASA Ames Agree to Extend Lease for Two Years

SAN JOSÉ, CA – Congressman Sam Liccardo (CA-16) announced that the Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA) (a Department of Defense Agency) and NASA Ames reached an agreement to avoid the imminent closure of the Moffett Federal Airfield Commissary.

In October 2025, Rep. Liccardo penned a letter to DeCA Director John Hall urging him to work with NASA Ames leadership to keep open this marketplace of affordable groceries for service members, veterans, and their families.  On February 2nd, Rep. Liccardo met with Director Hall and pressed for an agreement to extend the Moffett Field Commissary lease. On February 13th, DeCA and NASA agreed on the final lease agreement to operate for two more years (2028) with the option for an additional year (2029).

Under the agreement, DeCA operates the commissary, while the building and property belong to NASA Ames. The Mountain View location provides the only commissary facility in the Bay Area. The nearest alternative commissary is approximately 75 miles away.

“The Moffett Field Commissary amounts to much more than a grocery store––it offers a lifeline for our military families and veterans, and a cornerstone institution for our community,” said Rep. Liccardo. “Our residents led this fight — reaching out to our office and demanding action. We listened, leaned in, and are grateful we could get this deal done with DeCA. I’ll continue working closely with DeCA so our military families have uninterrupted access to affordable necessities.”

The new lease ensures uninterrupted operations until 2028. Liccardo is exploring federal funding options for the construction of a new commissary in the upcoming FY27 appropriations cycle.
