Federal Judge Halts Construction of Gilroy ICE Detention Center

SAN JOSÉ, CA — On Friday, a federal judge blocked construction of a proposed ICE detention facility in Gilroy, California. California Attorney General Rob Bonta and Santa Clara County challenged the project, arguing that it violates local and federal laws.

Rep. Sam Liccardo (CA-16), who represents portions of Santa Clara County, recently released a toolkit that helps local governments use zoning laws to mitigate the expansion of ICE detention facilities and safeguard community health and safety. San José, San Mateo County, and Napa County have already advanced such ordinances.

“This ruling marks a victory for Gilroy’s safety and well-being—but for other California communities, the clock starts now,” said Liccardo. “The Department of Homeland Security will scout alternative sites across our state. Don’t wait and wonder whether ICE will target your community next. Act now.”
